Why Switching Speed Matters More Than It Seems

A PSA or VSA cycle is only as efficient as its slowest valve transition. Every fraction of a second a switching valve takes longer than 1 second to fully open or close is time the adsorption tower spends in an undefined intermediate state — neither fully in the adsorption phase nor fully in regeneration. At thousands of cycles per day, small per-cycle delays compound into measurable losses in product recovery and purity.

Why Cycle Count, Not Calendar Time, Is the Real Spec

A valve rated for “3 million cycles” sounds abstract until you convert it to your own plant’s duty. A switching valve completing 2,000 cycles per day reaches 3 million cycles in roughly four years; one completing 500 cycles per day takes closer to sixteen. Specifying — or maintaining — on calendar-based intervals without reference to actual cycle count is the single most common reason PSA operators either over-maintain low-duty valves or get caught by an unplanned failure on a high-duty one.

The Construction Behind the Numbers

These performance figures aren’t achieved by a heavier build — they come from the same rotary, double-eccentric construction used across the UNIFLOW range: bi-directional sealing that avoids seat abrasion during closure, and a double-sealed gland construction rated for both vacuum and positive pressure service, since PSA/VSA cycles move through both regimes on every rotation.
